This Xmas The Good Penguin is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that supports people living with cancer. The UK population is growing and shifting towards older ages – these two changes, combined with improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment mean that more people will be affected by cancer and will live longer with it. Macmillan estimate that the number of people living with cancer will rise from an estimated 3.5 million in 2025 to 5.3 million in 2040. This is a concern given that current cancer care provision is approaching crisis point and that existing support services are struggling to cope.
Beyond the emotional, practical, physical and financial support that Macmillan provides to those living with cancer – Macmillan also campaigns and influences UK-wide cancer related policies, provides funding for healthcare professionals (e.g. Macmillan nurses), works with the NHS and partners to deliver services where they are needed (e.g. Macmillan Cancer Centres) and much more.
